Do I need an account to take notes?
No. Notepad Free has no accounts, no logins and no email collection. Open the page and start writing your notes immediately.
Where are my notes stored?
Your notes are saved locally in your browser using local storage — they never leave your device. If you clear your browser data or switch browsers, the notes will not carry over.
Are my notes private?
Yes. We do not see, read or store anything you type. Notes stay in your browser unless you deliberately use the Share button to create a public link.
How does the share link work?
When you share a note, its title and content are encoded directly into the link. Anyone who opens that link sees the note — there is no server-side storage involved.
Can I use the notepad offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, the editor works fully offline. Your notes are saved locally and remain available without an internet connection.
What formats can I write in?
You can write plain text, rich text, Markdown, a task list, a spreadsheet or a whiteboard drawing. You can import .txt files and export notes as text, Word, CSV, PNG or PDF.
Is there a note or character limit?
There is no fixed limit, but very large notes (several megabytes) may slow your browser. For long documents, download a .txt backup now and then.
Does the notepad work on my phone?
Yes. Notepad Free is fully responsive and works in any mobile browser — the editor, task lists, spreadsheet and whiteboard all adapt to smaller screens, and your notes are saved on the device you are using.
Can I password-protect a note?
Yes. Click the Password button in the toolbar to lock any note with a password. The note is encrypted using AES-GCM in your browser before it is saved — only someone with the correct password can open it. You can also add a password when sharing a note or downloading it as a protected .npf file.
How do I import a file into the notepad?
Click the Import button in the toolbar and select a .txt or .md file from your device. You can also import password-protected .npf files that were previously exported from Notepad Free. Drag and drop works too.
Can I export my notes to Word or PDF?
Yes. Open the Download menu and choose Word (.doc) to export as a Word-compatible document, or PDF (print) to save as a PDF using your browser's print dialog. You can also export as plain text, CSV or PNG image.
How do I switch between languages?
Use the language selector in the header at the top of any page. Notepad Free is available in 28 languages. Choosing a language loads the localised version of the site — your notes stay in your browser and are unaffected.
Can I keep multiple notes at the same time?
Yes. Notepad Free saves each note separately. Use the New button to create additional notes, give each a title, and they appear in the saved notes list below the editor. You can switch between notes, sort them by date or name, and delete any you no longer need.
